I have never wanted to be a writer; I have only ever wanted to be a teacher. I have never sought academic notoriety or the praise of scholars. My desire has always been much simpler — to understand the remarkable world in which we live and then share that understanding with others in a way that makes even the most complex scientific ideas accessible, logical and enjoyable. The Bioelectric Human is the culmination of that philosophy. My own journey toward writing this book began many years ago while working with people affected by trauma, addiction, chronic stress and illness. Again and again I found myself asking questions that seemed to reach beyond the boundaries of individual disciplines. How does the body organise healing? Why do trillions of cells behave as though they are part of a single integrated intelligence? How does the body know not only how to build itself, but how to rebuild itself? Those questions eventually led me into developmental biology, systems biology, neuroscience, regenerative medicine and bioelectric research, where I discovered that many seemingly unrelated fields were beginning to tell different parts of the same remarkable story. This book is my attempt to bring those discoveries together into a single coherent narrative that can be appreciated by specialists and non-specialists alike.
